Ordained into the Church of England in 1884. In 1901 he was appointed Bishop of London, a post that he held for thirty-eight years. He attracted controversy through his tireless advocacy of Britain’s cause during World War I, describing it as a ‘great crusade to defend the weak against the strong’.
