Queen consort of George V. The couple married in 1893 and were declared Prince and Princess of Wales in 1901. A strong supporter of the British Empire, Mary fell in love with India when she toured the country in 1905 and 1910-11. She became Queen consort in 1910 and worked tirelessly to promote charitable causes, particularly during the First World War. After the war, she formed the Queen’s Work for Women Fund.
