Thomas Cartwright was the son of Puritan divine Thomas Cartwright, and was ordained into the Church of England in 1653. His career blossomed after he adopted a firm Royalist stance on the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660. Cartwright published a number of pro-royalist sermons and in 1672 he was appointed chaplain to the king. When James II succeeded to the throne in 1685, Cartwright continued to be a staunch royal supporter. He was appointed as Bishop of Chester the following year. In 1688… more
