William George Scott, painter and printmaker, was the son of a house decorator. In 1928 he entered Belfast College of Art with a local scholarship. From 1931 to 1935 Scott studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London, where he won the silver medal for sculpture in 1933, the Landseer scholarship in painting (1934), and a Leverhulme travelling scholarship in 1935.
